Assemble all the tools such as adjustable wrench, screwdriver, nut driver. Ensure that you have a replacement thermocouple.

Gather your tools

Locate the gas valve and set it to “off” position. Deactivate the power at the electrical panel to avoid electrical hazards.

Turn off gas and power

The thermocouple is a small metal rod where one end is in the pilot flame, the other in a gas valve. It is typically near the pilot light.

Locate the thermocouple

Detach the old thermocouple from the pilot assembly and gas valve by using a screwdriver or nut driver.

Remove the old thermocouple

Ensure that the new thermocouple occupies the same position as the old one. Secure it tightly to both the pilot assembly and gas valve.

Install the new thermocouple

Reinstate the gas supply and reignite the pilot light. Observe the flame for a few minutes to check its functionality.

Test the pilot light

Tooltip

Switch the power on at the electrical panel. Monitor the furnace well to check that the ignition and heat production are correct.
